Tucson police officers confronted and stopped an armed suspect early Sunday morning after nine people suffered gunshot wounds in the city’s crowded downtown entertainment district, according to authorities who praised the rapid response that prevented further casualties.

Officers Respond to Active Shooter

The incident unfolded around 2 a.m. local time as crowds filled the streets during a busy weekend night. Officers assigned to foot patrol in downtown Tucson heard gunfire and immediately ran toward the sound, according to Officer Frank Magos, spokesperson for the Tucson Police Department. Upon encountering the armed suspect, officers issued repeated commands before one officer discharged his firearm, striking the gunman and ending the threat. Officers then provided first aid to both the suspect and wounded victims at the scene.

Nine adult victims sustained gunshot wounds to their extremities and were transported to area hospitals in critical condition. The adult male suspect was also hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. His identity was not immediately released pending the ongoing investigation. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation due to the officer-involved shooting protocol.

Possible Motive Under Investigation

Investigators are examining whether the shooting stemmed from an earlier confrontation between two groups, according to sources from the Tucson Police Department who spoke with local ABC affiliate KGUN. Authorities have requested that anyone with knowledge of the incident or video footage contact investigators. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero condemned what she called “another serious and senseless act of gun violence” in a statement released Sunday. “A shooter recklessly began shooting in a crowded area, striking nine people before being stopped by a Tucson Police Officer,” Romero stated, adding that the impact extends beyond the immediate victims to affect family members, first responders, witnesses, and the entire community. Former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords, who survived a 2011 assassination attempt near Tucson that killed six people, expressed heartbreak over the incident. “Too many lives have been changed forever because of America’s gun violence crisis, in my hometown and across the nation,” Giffords wrote, thanking first responders for their bravery while awaiting additional information about the attack.
