A foreign national wanted in connection with the brutal murder of American mother Jamey Carney has been arrested in Jordan after fleeing Ireland, marking a dramatic turn in an international manhunt that exposed critical flaws in Ireland’s asylum system.

International Manhunt Ends With Arrest

Jordanian authorities detained the suspect within 48 hours of learning he had returned to his native country and was the focus of a murder investigation by Irish police, according to Irish media reports. The man, described by Irish authorities as a person of interest, had traveled approximately 200 miles from the crime scene to Dublin Airport before boarding a flight to Istanbul. Irish officials were notified of the arrest on Monday, though police have not yet requested his extradition.

Carney, a 43-year-old New York native who relocated to Ireland in 2021, died from suffocation after suffering head injuries at her home in Killarney, County Kerry. Her 13-year-old daughter discovered her body around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, hours after investigators believe the fatal assault occurred around 11 p.m. Monday evening. By the time her body was found, the suspect had already left the country.

Asylum System Failures Under Scrutiny

The suspect had reportedly been denied asylum in Ireland but remained in the country while appealing that decision. He still possessed his passport, which allowed him to flee before authorities discovered Carney’s body. The man arrived in Ireland in 2024 and worked in hospitality and construction before becoming involved with Carney. According to reports, he had expressed interest in relocating to the United States and told acquaintances Carney was helping him pursue American residency.
