Travolta Honored at Cannes for Directorial Debut

John Travolta received an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday, a surprise recognition that accompanied the premiere of his first film as director, a project based on his own children’s book and featuring his daughter in the cast.

A Family Affair on the Red Carpet

The 72-year-old actor walked the red carpet alongside his 26-year-old daughter Ella, who stars in the film as a flight attendant. Travolta appeared in a distinctive new look, sporting a cream-colored wool beret and glasses paired with a classic black suit, white shirt, and tie. Ella wore a black dress with diamonds for the premiere at the Debussy Theater. The pair were joined by 11-year-old co-star Clark Shotwell and co-producer Jason Berger for the screening.

The film, titled “Propeller One-Way Night Coach,” represents Travolta’s adaptation of his own 1997 children’s book. The story follows a young airplane enthusiast named Jeff and his mother on a cross-country journey to Hollywood. The project marks a significant milestone for the Travolta family, bringing together father and daughter on screen in a meaningful creative collaboration.

Historic Recognition and Emotional Response

Festival director Thierry Fremaux surprised Travolta with the honorary Palme d’Or just before the screening. The actor, visibly moved, told the cheering crowd he never expected such recognition. “You said this would be a special night, but I didn’t think you meant this,” Travolta said. He revealed that when he learned in November that his film had been accepted, he “cried like a baby.” The film made history as the first ever selected for Cannes 2026, chosen earlier than any previous entry.

Travolta joins Peter Jackson and Barbra Streisand as recipients of the honorary award at this year’s festival. Fremaux praised Travolta as “one of the greatest artists of the 20th and 21st centuries,” acknowledging his decades-long contributions to cinema from “Grease” to his latest directorial venture.

Family Legacy and Future Release

Travolta welcomed Ella in April 2000 with his late wife Kelly Preston, who died of breast cancer in 2020 at age 57. The couple also had son Ben, now 15, and son Jett, who passed away at age 16 in January 2009 after suffering a seizure during a family vacation. Ella has built her own career in fashion and entertainment, appearing on magazine covers and making her acting debut in the 2009 film “Old Dogs” alongside both parents. “Propeller One-Way Night Coach” will premiere on Apple TV on May 29.
