A gunman driving through a Paris suburb opened fire on pedestrians Friday morning, killing one person and wounding at least five others, including a 12-year-old girl shot eight times. French authorities are investigating the attack as a terrorist act motivated by racial hatred.
Fifteen Minutes of Terror
The shooter fired what authorities described as a military-grade automatic weapon from his vehicle as he drove through the communities of Trappes and La Verriere, located about 13 miles west of Paris. The attack began around 10:30 a.m. local time and lasted just under 15 minutes before five officers from an anti-crime brigade stopped the suspect. The mayor of Trappes said the gunman fired at random targets across three separate locations, including a playground, apparently seeking to create mass casualties.
Witnesses reported seeing a gray Renault Clio speeding through the area as bursts of gunfire rang out. One resident described seeing a body on the ground from his window while his mother reported hearing loud bangs as the vehicle raced past. Forensic investigators examined multiple crime scenes, including a gas station where evidence suggested the shooter had fired on civilians.
Young Victim in Critical Condition
The 12-year-old girl struck eight times remains in stable but serious condition. Three other victims suffered life-threatening injuries and were listed in critical condition. Officials confirmed the deceased victim was of African origin, while one of the critically wounded victims is of North African origin. The mayor of Trappes called it a miracle that more people were not killed given the weapons used and the randomness of the attack.
Prosecutors opened an investigation for murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office placed three additional individuals from the suspect’s family and social circle in police custody Friday evening, though officials have not disclosed the reason for those detentions. The suspect has four prior convictions on his criminal record, all of which have been legally expunged.
Security Response and Investigation
French President Emmanuel Macron called the shooting a racist terror attack, stating victims were targeted solely because of their skin color or perceived religion. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez warned officials would be uncompromising with anyone involved in violence or vandalism following the attack. Major Paris museums, including the Louvre, closed their doors, and Art Basel Paris canceled its weekend programming due to safety concerns. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the arrested suspect as the investigation continues.
This is an example of what happens when you have open borders or even allow so called refugees into your country unvetted with no deadline when they must return to the country of origin.
