Pattern of Alleged Discrimination

Former Google employee April Curley filed the 2022 lawsuit against the Mountain View, California-based company, claiming it maintained a systematic practice of steering Black workers into lower-level, lower-paid positions. The suit alleged hiring managers rejected qualified Black candidates as not being ‘Googly’ enough, language the plaintiffs characterized as a clear signal of race-based discrimination. Additional allegations included interviewers undermining Black candidates during the hiring process and creating hostile work environments for those who raised concerns about unfair treatment.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing the plaintiffs, emphasized the broader implications for the tech industry. He stated the settlement represents accountability for discriminatory practices that have limited opportunities for Black employees across the sector. Settlement Terms and Company Response

The settlement, announced in May 2025 and granted final approval this week, does not constitute an admission of liability by Google. The company maintained it strongly disagrees with allegations of improper treatment and remains committed to consistent practices in hiring, compensation, and career advancement for all employees. Beyond financial terms, the agreement requires Google to conduct pay equity analyses, implement pay transparency measures, and limit mandatory arbitration for employment disputes through at least August 2026.
