Arlington County Police Department released FBI-created composite sketches of an unidentified man whose remains were discovered in a basement more than a year ago, hoping the public can help solve a mystery that has stumped investigators and federal databases.

Discovery in Abandoned Property

Property owners made the grim discovery on February 26, 2024, during a walkthrough of an abandoned building they had recently purchased in the 1300 block of North Taylor Street. The man’s remains were found in the basement of the property. Police launched an immediate investigation, though authorities determined the death did not appear to result from foul play. Despite extensive forensic work, medical examiners could not establish a definitive cause of death, leaving investigators with limited leads to pursue.

National Database Produces No Matches

Investigators submitted DNA evidence from the remains to the Combined DNA Index System, the national database that catalogs genetic information from millions of criminal cases and missing persons reports across the country. The search produced no matches, meaning the man had no criminal record and was not reported missing in any jurisdiction that contributed data to the federal system. With traditional identification methods exhausted, Arlington County Police requested assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to create composite sketches based on the physical remains.

The FBI-generated sketches represent the best hope authorities have for identifying the man and notifying any surviving family members. Arlington County Police emphasized that someone in the community may recognize the individual depicted in the composite images.
