Socialists RECRUIT Maine Candidate After First Choice Rejected

Democratic Socialists of America operatives Daniel Moraff and Leanne Fan recruited Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner only after rejecting their first choice, revealing a coordinated strategy to place hand-picked candidates in federal races across America.

Socialist Activists Target Maine Senate Race

Moraff and Fan, both Ivy League graduates who met working on Bernie Sanders’ 2020 campaign, traveled to Maine specifically searching for a Senate candidate matching a precise profile. According to interviews with Politico and the Wall Street Journal, the pair initially pursued union leader Chris Williams before abandoning him after determining he had what they called a skeleton in the closet. They then turned their attention to Platner, meeting first with his mother at her fine dining restaurant before approaching the reluctant candidate himself.

Platner initially resisted the recruitment effort and required convincing to launch his Senate bid. The operatives consulted with Morris Katz, a left-wing strategist who has advised other candidates including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, before Platner agreed to run. The couple described their eventual choice as exceptional during their December interview with Politico.

Vetting Failures Expose Campaign Problems

Despite hiring a research firm and spending what Moraff described as a whole chunk of money on candidate vetting, the operatives admitted they remained unaware of multiple Platner controversies until media outlets reported them. When Wall Street Journal interviewer Aaron Zitner pressed them on specifics, the pair acknowledged their vetting process failed to identify a controversial tattoo that later became a campaign issue. The research firm also missed numerous problematic social media posts, though Moraff claimed they received some of the posts but not all of them.

National Strategy to Reshape Democratic Party

The Maine recruitment represents part of a broader Democratic Socialists of America effort to place candidates in races nationwide. Moraff and Fan have recruited multiple candidates in different states, signaling an organized push to transform the Democratic Party from within. The strategy focuses on identifying working-class candidates who fit specific demographic profiles, then providing them with strategic guidance and campaign infrastructure. This coordinated approach demonstrates how activist organizations are increasingly bypassing traditional party structures to advance their political agenda through hand-selected standard-bearers in federal elections.
