A social media-promoted gathering in rural California turned deadly Saturday night when gunfire killed one person and wounded six others, sending over 300 attendees fleeing into the night as multiple law enforcement agencies rushed to contain the chaos in Morgan Hill.

The incident unfolded shortly after 10 p.m. in Morgan Hill, located approximately 25 miles south of San Jose, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies initially responded to reports of intoxicated individuals blocking roadways and hurling bottles at passing vehicles. Upon arrival, officers discovered an unsanctioned party advertised on social media had descended into pandemonium after a shooter opened fire on the crowd with a handgun.

Responding deputies immediately provided lifesaving assistance to the wounded until emergency medical personnel arrived on scene. Despite their efforts, one victim was pronounced dead at the location. Six additional victims sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to area hospitals.
