Paul Pelosi, the 86-year-old husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, faces criminal charges after allegedly striking a parked vehicle in California wine country and driving away from the scene, marking his second legal trouble in four years.
Hit-and-Run Incident in Wine Country
Prosecutors in Napa County charged Pelosi with misdemeanor hit-and-run following a July 3 incident in Yountville, California. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office reported that Pelosi was driving his brown convertible when he collided with a legally parked car on the roadside. Witnesses stated he briefly stopped before leaving the scene. The unoccupied vehicle sustained damage, but no injuries occurred.
Authorities confirmed Pelosi had no alcohol in his system at the time of the collision. State law requires drivers involved in property damage accidents to stop and exchange vehicle and license information with affected parties. Pelosi’s failure to comply resulted in the misdemeanor charge. Prosecutors also charged him with an infraction for making an unlawful turn during the incident.
Previous DUI Conviction Raises Questions
The charges arrive four years after Pelosi’s 2022 guilty plea to misdemeanor driving under the influence charges in the same county. That conviction resulted in a five-day jail sentence, though he served only two days behind bars with good conduct credit applied to two additional days. He completed his final day through a courthouse work program.
The court ordered Pelosi to pay thousands in fines and victim restitution, attend a three-month drinking driver class, and install an ignition interlock device in his vehicle. This technology requires drivers to provide breath samples proving sobriety before the engine starts. He received three years of probation as part of that sentence.
Court Appearance Scheduled for August
Pelosi’s arraignment is scheduled for August 14. No attorney representation appeared in court records at the time charges were filed. Nancy Pelosi’s press office did not respond to requests for comment on her husband’s latest legal difficulties.
The incident occurs years after Pelosi survived a brutal home invasion attack in 2022 at the couple’s San Francisco residence, where an intruder severely beat him with a hammer. That attack, which occurred during Nancy Pelosi’s tenure as House Speaker, resulted in serious injuries requiring hospitalization. The contrast between being a crime victim and now facing criminal charges highlights the complexity of the family’s recent experiences with law enforcement.
