Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced that officers arrested Ratliff as he walked along a city street after securing two search warrants and an arrest warrant. The chief indicated more arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
The medical examiner’s determination proved critical for investigators who could not obtain a murder warrant without the official homicide ruling. Fortune’s body was discovered in a hanging position on August 3, showing various stages of decomposition. Brackney declined to release specific details about the manner of death, citing the need to protect the investigation’s integrity and prevent compromising evidence that only those involved would know.
Connection Between Suspect and Victim
Police discovered Ratliff had an association with Fortune that became increasingly apparent through interviews with nearly 15 people connected to the case and collection of forensic evidence. Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, told reporters she broke down crying upon learning of the arrest, repeatedly thanking police for their work. Delta State University student Trey Reed, 21, was found in Cleveland, and Cory Zukatis, an unhoused man in his 30s, was discovered in Vicksburg. Authorities ruled both deaths suicides.
