Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared success after clearing homeless encampments from Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area, but frustrated residents say the city merely shuffled RV dwellers to nearby streets while ignoring the real problem ahead of the 2028 Olympics.
City Touts Cleanup Operation
The Los Angeles Fire Department deployed a 26-member crew in March to remove 4,776 cubic yards of debris and invasive plants from the Sepulveda Basin, a planned venue for the 2028 Olympics. Workers dismantled more than 50 encampments, offered services to displaced individuals, and installed over 50 “No Camping” signs throughout the recreation area. Bass described the operation as a comprehensive strategy centered on public safety, claiming her administration delivered real results on longstanding challenges.
Residents Report No Real Change
Encino residents told local media the city failed to address people living in cars and RVs near Balboa Sports Center. After officials posted no parking signs, RV dwellers simply relocated to the park’s parking lot or residential streets. One resident expressed frustration that taxpayers must deal with unsafe park conditions, including unleashed dogs running wild in areas designed for children’s recreation. The neighborhood council sent a letter to city officials demanding a real solution rather than temporary displacement.
Pattern of Incomplete Solutions
This marks the second time in recent months that Los Angeles residents have complained about ineffective encampment cleanups. West LA residents reported similar problems in February, with encampments reappearing shortly after removal operations. The mayor’s office maintains that cleaning the basin requires sustained, long-term effort and promises continued direct engagement with Valley residents and community leaders. Bass reportedly visits the basin regularly alongside first responders to monitor progress, though skeptical residents question whether the administration prioritizes optics over lasting solutions to homelessness.
