A Michigan appeals court has overturned the conviction of Joseph Morrison, who spent years in prison for his role in the alleged plot to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer—a scheme that federal informants designed, funded, and executed while targeting ordinary Americans with terrorism charges.
Appeals Court Reverses Controversial Conviction
The Michigan Court of Appeals vacated Morrison’s conviction on Tuesday, marking a significant reversal in one of the most controversial cases of FBI entrapment in recent history. Morrison, a founding member of the Wolverine Watchmen, was imprisoned following the October 2020 announcement of a kidnapping plot that federal agents had orchestrated from the start. The FBI deployed at least 12 informants to manipulate the group while secretly recording conversations and organizing training exercises designed to entrap participants.
The case became a political weapon during the contentious 2020 election, providing Democrats with ammunition to portray Trump supporters as dangerous extremists. The timing of the arrests, just weeks before Election Day in the battleground state of Michigan, raised questions about political motivations behind the prosecution.
FBI Informants Crossed Ethical Lines
Court documents and testimony revealed shocking details about FBI tactics in the operation. One female FBI operative shared a bed with target Barry Croft and smoked marijuana with him during the investigation. Federal agents organized and paid for militia meetings and field training exercises, then arrested participants for attending events the government itself had created. The FBI attempted to expand the operation into a multi-state conspiracy involving multiple governors and militia groups but failed to gain traction beyond Michigan.
Investigative reporter Christina Urso described the operation as resembling Soviet-era tactics, where authorities create criminal conspiracies and then prosecute those they manipulated into participation. The FBI never disclosed its central role in crafting the plot when announcing the arrests.
Justice Delayed For Innocent Americans
Morrison’s release comes after years of imprisonment for crimes federal agents manufactured. While Antifa and Black Lives Matter riots caused billions in damage across American cities in 2020, the FBI focused resources on entrapping working-class Americans in fabricated terrorism plots. The overturned conviction raises questions about how many other Americans remain imprisoned for crimes created by government operatives rather than genuine criminal intent. Federal authorities have yet to acknowledge wrongdoing or reform the informant programs that enabled this abuse of power against citizens exercising their constitutional rights.
