Eight protesters face criminal charges after obstructing emergency entrances at a Brooklyn hospital and damaging federal vehicles during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation Saturday night, according to the New York Police Department.
Protests Erupt After ICE Arrest
Approximately 200 demonstrators gathered outside Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Bushwick around 10:25 p.m. following the arrest of Chidozie Wilson Okeke, an undocumented immigrant from Nigeria with prior arrests for assault and drug possession. The Department of Homeland Security reported Okeke attempted to strike ICE agents with his vehicle during the arrest, then physically attacked officers with punches and elbows before being subdued. Officers transported him to the medical center after he requested medical attention.
During his medical evaluation, officials say Okeke threw himself to the floor and screamed. Outside the hospital, crowds blocked vehicle traffic and obstructed emergency entrances and exits. The NYPD issued repeated verbal warnings to disperse before making arrests. Nine individuals were detained, with eight facing charges including resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief. One person received a criminal court summons and was released.
Federal Officers Assaulted During Protest
The Department of Homeland Security described the demonstrators as anti-ICE agitators who became violent during the standoff. Protesters damaged several ICE vehicles and assaulted federal officers, resulting in minor injuries to law enforcement personnel. A DHS spokesperson emphasized that assaulting law enforcement constitutes a felony crime. The agency defended the arrest, stating officers followed training protocols and used the minimum force necessary to apprehend Okeke safely.
NYPD Had No Prior Notice of Operation
The New York Police Department confirmed they received no advance warning about the ICE operation that sparked the protest. The department responded only after reports of disorderly conduct and obstruction at the hospital. The lack of coordination between federal immigration enforcement and local police highlights ongoing tensions over immigration enforcement in sanctuary cities. Federal immigration operations continue across the country targeting individuals with criminal records, though such arrests frequently generate opposition from activist groups who mobilize quickly through social media networks to interfere with law enforcement activities.
