Zohran Mamdani MANDATES Five IDs for Shovelers

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faces criticism for requiring five forms of identification to register as an emergency snow shoveler while simultaneously opposing voter ID requirements through his Democratic Socialist Party membership.

Snow Shoveling Bureaucracy

The NYC Sanitation Department mandates that emergency snow shoveler applicants provide two small photos measuring 1-1.5 square inches, two original forms of identification plus copies, and their social security card. Mamdani announced the snow shoveler program during a Saturday press conference, directing New Yorkers to bring extensive paperwork to local sanitation garages. The position pays $19.14 per hour, increasing to $28.71 after forty hours of work per week.

The mayor belongs to the New York chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, which strongly opposes the SAVE Act voter identification law, calling such requirements racist. This contrast between employment verification and voting requirements sparked widespread social media criticism. One user posted a reference to climate activist Greta Thunberg alongside commentary about work eligibility requirements for snow shovelers.

City’s Legal Defense

A City Hall spokesperson defended the identification requirements, explaining that federal law mandates work authorization verification before issuing employee payments. The spokesperson emphasized that New York City cannot legally distribute paychecks without completing proper documentation processes, similar to any employer’s obligations. This federal requirement applies to all temporary city workers, including emergency snow shovelers hired during winter storms.

Storm Preparations

New York City braces for a major blizzard expected to dump up to twenty-four inches of snow. Weather forecasters predict wind gusts reaching sixty miles per hour, with snowfall rates of one to three inches per hour during peak storm intensity. The severe weather conditions necessitate additional emergency personnel, including temporary snow removal workers, to assist regular sanitation crews in maintaining city operations and public safety during the winter emergency.
