National Guard Presence EXTENDED in New Orleans

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry announced Monday that 120 National Guard troops will remain stationed in New Orleans through August, maintaining a visible military presence in the city to deter criminal activity and support local law enforcement during major public events.

Federal Funding Covers Extended Deployment

The extended deployment will be funded entirely by the federal government, according to Kate Kelly, a spokesperson for Governor Landry. The guard members will continue serving as a deterrent force against crime in New Orleans, though officials did not clarify whether troops would be deployed to other Louisiana cities. The announcement comes after the National Guard successfully supported security operations during New Year’s celebrations, Mardi Gras, and the extended carnival season.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell, referred to as Moreno in official statements, expressed support for the continued partnership with the Louisiana National Guard. She emphasized the importance of military support for upcoming major events scheduled throughout the spring and summer months. The deployment marks an extension of the National Guard’s presence that began during the holiday season, when 120 troops first arrived to patrol high-traffic areas like the French Quarter along Royal Street.

Combating Violence Across Louisiana

Governor Landry defended the extended deployment on social media platform X, stating the continued presence will help combat violence not only in New Orleans but throughout Louisiana. Landry noted that Louisiana previously sent National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., demonstrating the state’s willingness to deploy military resources when needed. The governor framed the deployment as part of a broader public safety strategy addressing crime concerns that have affected the state’s largest city.

Multi-Agency Coordination Continues

Major General Thomas Friloux, adjutant general of the Louisiana National Guard, confirmed the troops have worked closely with city, state, and federal agencies to improve public safety during recent high-profile events. The military police units have conducted regular patrols alongside Louisiana law enforcement agencies, creating a coordinated response to security challenges. Friloux pledged continued commitment to partnerships aimed at keeping New Orleans safe for both residents and the millions of tourists who visit annually. The deployment represents one of the longest peacetime National Guard operations in Louisiana’s recent history, extending military presence on city streets for nine consecutive months through summer 2026.
